Human Expansionism
When: ~200 Years ago
Where: The Obsidian Wilds, The Beast Lands (what is now The Beastfolk Dominion)
What: Colonization
History:
Citizens from Ruthenia, Alexandria and Greenwich - humanity right on the cusp of an industrial revolution - sought to colonize the two largest so-far unspoiled continents on the map. The primal, deadly rainforest continent known as the Obsidian Wilds was one, and the Beast Lands (a term sometimes considered derogatory and not of the native's choice) was the other.
While the latter was already inhabited by numerous nomadic Beastfolk groups, superior technology saw the colonists quickly taking control of the coasts and establishing local law. Unorganized beyond the clan and unprepared for this level of what was technically invasion, the Beastfolk slowly took on a legal second-class status within the human-occupied lands, sharing in the same kind of status their people knew in many other places around the world.
The creatures of the Obsidian Wilds didn't respond much in any form to the colonists. Like animals unwilling to fight, they simply retreated deeper into the great jungles and left them alone. The two continents were and still are exceedingly dangerous places, but they offered much in terms of resources for such nations in the middle of an industrial revolution.
Colonization of the northern half of the Obsidian Wilds progressed largely unobstructed, generations passing as they developed numerous settlements along the shorelines. Seizing an opportunity presented by the jungles, homeland governments began to create secret science and magic research stations, further out in remote locations where few had reason to look. Cloaking spells ensured few ever interfered with them, and the Wild Fey hardly cared.
