Valonius Character Sheet
Player: Terran
Contact: PM, or if it's been a few days, try email to liaura980@yahoo.com
Intentions: Hero
Background
Name: Asce N'dant
Race: Human
Species: Human
Age: 40
Tier: 3
Social
Place of Birth: Ruthenia, Rasgrad. Currently lives in Rynok, in a small two story building, the upper level providing living quarters, and the lower serving as an apothecary shop that Asce runs.
Allegiances: Former member of Ruthenian military, currently pledges his allegiance to the Ruthenian Resistance movement.
Aspirations: To make a lasting change for the betterment of the oppressed.
Nicknames: His first name, Asce, which is pronounced "Ace".
Titles: Formerly, Lt. Commander Asce N'dant, 6th Division. These days, that rank has been replaced by the title, "Wanted: Alive" After his exit from the military, he kept his first name, but uses the pseudonym "Hawkins" for his last. (Once there's more data on the Ruthenian Resistence, I'll provide a title/rank with them as well.
Relatives: Parents are both dead, in a factory "accident" that is likely to have been fabricated as a means to help sever the young Asce from his family ties and to make him more reliant on the Ruthenian military.
Significant Other: None at this time, due to the danger it would put his loved ones in if the Ruthenian military ever caught up to him. No matter how much he might like to establish a relationship, Asce remains unwilling to inflict this hardship on another.
Mental
Personality: Self-explanatory. Please include one or more paragraphs on this topic.
Likes: Chess, open spaces, sunlight, field testing a new device, learning.
Dislikes: Injustice, being unprepared, having field tested devices explode on him, watching someone teach a youngster to hate and fear non-humans.
Strengths: What your character is socially or mentally good at. This can be in paragraph or list format. Empathic talent: Concerned as he is with the monumental injustice of his society, Asce is grateful for his empathic talent, as it helps him determine who's bullying because they enjoy it, and who's doing it to bluff for others to see. Being able to sense emotions and sympathize with them has given Asce an invaluable edge in dealing with people of all sorts.
Dedication: Once he sets his mind to a task, Asce is very hard to turn from his path. He's willing to concede defeat only for as long as it takes him to get back at the problem from a new angle, then the game has begun anew. Nothing is impossible. NOTHING.
Long Range Planning: Working hand in hand with his dedicated nature, Asce has learned to plan for the future, and to keep planning. Bordering on the pathological, his obsession with having a fall back plan has saved his bacon time and again.
Photographic Memory
Weaknesses:
Empathic talent: Both a gift and a curse, Asce is particularly bad at allowing harm and punishment to come to the innocent. Since the awakening of his Empathic ability, Asce has found it much harder to hang back when someone is being mistreated, a trait that's not good for his survival in a nation where Fey are hunted and Beastfolk are routinely punished just for existing.
Paranoia: Starting with the highly competitive (and back-stabbing) nature of his military cadre, Asce formed an increasingly refined sense of paranoia as a defense mechanism. In the military environment, it just made sense to have journals written in code, with inks that were not visible unless read by moonlight. Of course. And it's quite natural to be as evasive as one can get away with, to keep one's enemies from taking advantage of you. While this takes a certain amount of internal vigilance and energy, it's better than having your research stolen or having no alibi when someone is trying to pin the blame of a sizable SNAFU on you. Due to the nature of his exit from the military, Asce has been forced to maintain his vigilance, as the stakes are higher now than ever. As a result, Asce has trouble trusting new acquaintances, and looks at almost EVERYTHING as though there is some hidden pattern of information coded within, be it a conversation or a seemingly random pattern of events.
Specific fear of being buried alive.
Physical
Major Details: What major details define your character's appearance, including things like eye color, hair color, skin color, and any similar major feature that can be noticed at a glance. This can be in paragraph of list format. 5'10", well tanned caucasian, distinctive scars including where he had his appendix removed and a knife fighting scar just over his left eyebrow. Dark brown eyes and hair, hair is cropped short. Lean, wiry appearance, and a confident stride.
Appearance:
Dressed half-way between an executive on his weekend and a cowboy on his workday, Asce's style of dress reflects his overall attitude, a meeting of practicality and paranoia. Take away the fedora and cowboy duster and he'd fit in an office some where. Close the duster and shift his holsters to the outside of it and the only office he'd fit into would be the merc. hiring station by the train station. The ability to blend in also lets Asce bluff his way through a variety of situations that otherwise might end in violence. After all, who would want to detain and question someone who is obviously an eccentric businessman?
Natural Abilities: Nothing that would set him apart from the average human recently out of the military, aside from extraordinarily steady hands. This last is a product of working for years with volatile materials and the exacting requirements of Written magic.
Natural Traits: None outstanding from the typical human.
Strengths: What your character is physically good at. This can be in paragraph or list format.
Well acquainted with combat ranging from hand to hand up to the basics of a light infantryman. Even while acting primarily as a researcher for the Ruthenian military, certain rubrics had to be met in demonstrating physical strength and marksmanship; Asce kept his scores high to avoid notice from ranking officers. No longer a part of the military, these same abilities serve him well on the run from his former employers. Asce does his best to maintain his stamina by taking long walks every day.
Weaknesses:
True, Asce has been in the military since he was 16. But the majority of his time in was more in the role of a scientist than a fighter. Many of the skills he learned on entry to the military have scarcely been used since, and as such have atrophied accordingly. These days, any fight lasting for more substantial than a tavern brawl has to be escalated into a quick finish, otherwise Asce won't be able to maintain extravagant expenditures of energy. While he is overall still fit from his military days, his main weakness falls under a heart defect that gives a small percentile chance of him dying on the spot when called upon to act strenuously. Aware of this defect, Asce does his best to analyze situations before leaping into action, even when immediate action is what is required.
Magical
Specializations: Beneath here, list what Specializations your character has taken at each successive tier.
- Tier 1: Material (Sunlight) Proficiency 3.5
- Tier 2: Written (Sunlight, Geometric Shapes) Proficiency 3.5 Asce literally writes using sunlight, either by focusing light to burn shapes into materials or by reflecting light along paths that shape the design in question. Asce's written magic has no power behind it if not written in sunlight.
- Tier 3: Material (Palladium, presence of) proficiency 3.5
Visual Display: Reflecting his specializations in sunlight, many of his spells and magical effects produce a corona of spectral fire around the caster/user. This effect holds true not just for Asce, but for anyone drinking a potion he's made, or wearing magic armor he's created. Activation of written magic displays visually with the symbol that is being activated appearing in the air in front of the user, drawn in lines of fiery brilliance.
Special Abilities: Enhanced Sense (Life-force), Teleportation (ray of sunlight flavor), Enhanced Recovery, Healing
Bonus Special Abilities: Alternate Sense: Life-force: Warm colors for animals, cool colors for plants, and general brightness for the size of the organism or in the case of looking at a mage, how roughly what their tier is. Not specific enough to tell if it's an advanced 2 or a newly minted 3, just roughly how strong their life-force is. Life force appears as a nebulous sphere, giving no clue as to the shape or dimensions of the creature sensed. Takes a measure of interpretation, such as difficulty of telling if a dog has fleas just by looking for the life forces involved. Undead or purely mechanical constructs are functionally invisible to this sense. Empathy.
Unique Abilities: None
Strengths: What your character is magically good at. This can be in paragraph or list format.
Nearly all of Asce's magical training has been provided to him by his 24 years as a part of the Ruthenian military. As such, he is extremely proficient with applied combat magics, which generally fall into two categories: weapons he has made and traps he's set up. Both take advantage of his experience as a Material and Written mage, and Asce's general mind set of "come prepared, then prepare again" means he almost always has some sort of fall-back plan, which manifests in his magic as redundant activators or alternate releases for energy, in the event the first attempt goes awry.
Weaknesses: What your character is magically bad at. This can be in paragraph or list format.
Life-sense ability is only functional inside the range of 15 feet per tier. Boosted by Enhanced Sense, Asce's ability to "see" life energy extends to 180 feet.
Asce's magical training has been provided primarily by the military, and while his spellwork demonstrates a measure of creativity, Asce knows relatively few spells pertaining to non-combat purposes. Thus, while he can be a formidable opponent, he's far from the best choice for utility spell work unless he's had a significant amount of time to research the problem.
Inventory
Mundane:
Belt knife, wallet (throw-away, in case he's mugged), actual wallet.
Standard outfit: Tan, full length duster, obviously seen a lot of use. Calf high boots, black, moderate tread, liberally smeared with mud. Black khaki pants. Worn black leather belt, simple silver catch. White button down shirt, open at the collar. Black button front vest, subtly striped with gray (vertical stripes). Pocket watch on chain in side pocket of vest. Tan, wide brimmed fedora.
Two holsters slung in the small of his back, crossed so a casual reach behind him puts the butt of a LANCER in his palm. Worn outside his clothing, inside his coat.
Heavy palladium ring, carved with stylistic hawk, worn on the middle finger of his left hand. ( image.rakuten.co.jp/analog/cabinet/cheapmonday11ss/img57466656.jpg )
Magical: List what magical items your character carries with them most (if not all) of the time.
Charge Cloak: Material (Perpetual). This very lightweight dust-cloak is jet black and has a slight shimmer to it, as though it were woven of very fine glass threads. The cloak has 4 slots for the 4 heavy bars, which look to be obsidian, two on each shoulder, to be lodged. Each bar is rectangular in shape, a hand long, a few fingers in width, and half that of depth. Each bar is actually a separate magical item. When the cloak is exposed to sunlight, the fibers of the "fabric" feed energy into the bars mounted on the shoulders. Typically folded up in a pocket when not being used.
Capacitor Mk 2b: Written (Charged). Made of highly polished obsidian, this item takes the form of a rectangular bar a hand long, a few fingers in width, and half that of depth. Intricate carvings of helixes, toruses, and fractal patterns cover the surface. The Mk 2b capacitor acts as a reservoir of sun-light energy for powering some of Asce's creations.
LANCER handgun. Written (Charged). Etched with geometric patterns that are focused a harsh linear style, this light-weight metal item at first glance appears to be a matte-black, long barreled handgun. Beneath the barrel there is a narrow slot made to accept the Mk 2b capacitor, which serves as the primary energy source for the weapon. When fired, this weapon emits a bright "lance" of concentrated solar energy that appears to be a foot long and an inch in diameter. The solar energy is tinged a golden color from the firing mechanics, and is capable of penetrating even metal surfaces at significant range. The main drawback is the LANCER handgun consumes power very quickly, each capacitor providing only 15 shots before being entirely exhausted. If left in direct sunlight for one hour, the LANCER handgun can store enough power for a single shot, without use of a charged Mk 2b. Asce routinely carries two of these with him, in the holsters mentioned above.
SkETCH: Written (Activated). Patterned with painstaking spirals and darts, this item closely resembles a flattened stylus, with a small button near the pointed tip and an adjustor ring at the top. By pressing the button, the SkETCH produces a narrow beam of pure sunlight, sufficient to burn through small quantities of metal. The marks covering the stylus are patterned to help absorb sunlight, which can be stored in the stylus for later use. Asce uses this item for most of the Written magic he performs.
Ring of Arming - Written (Activated). A silver ring on the middle finger of his right hand, with runes on the edges. The ring can "absorb" one set of attire (even magical items) when twisted, and can later exchange what the user wears with what it has absorbed if twisted again.
Inside that Ring of Arming...
SHIVA armor: Sunlight Harnessing Internalized Vector Assault armor. Essentially a light mech. Twin shoulder mounted weapons pods, with cyclical lancer emitters. Silver edged claws, cold iron edged for the feet, KIDs (Kinetic Impact Disperser) for protection from firearms and explosives. Light-weight construction, pilot wearing the device comes to no more weight than two people. Adds no more than 2 feet to your height. Right shoulder carries a deployable shield, folded just below the "bicep" of the arm.
SHIVA's Sword: Written (Activated). Made from a brightly shining metal alloy, this straight sword is in proportion for the SHIVA armor. Both the blade and handle are lightly etched with twisting geometric patterns that spiral up along the length. Emits a fiery glow of light along the blade, and is exceptionally strong and sharp, even when compared to the relatively lighter material the SHIVA armor itself is made of. When hoisted aloft, actual flames spring into being along the length of the blade. Sheathed at the hip of the armor when not in use.
Book of SHIVA: Written (Perpetual). Made of artificially toughened glass composite (think bulletproof glass), this book is approximately the size of a large text-book, though not quite the same thickness. The magic inscribed on the cover causes it to emit a soft glow, enough light so the pages can be read even in total darkness. The magic also serves to protect the book from jarring impact damaging the pages. Linked to a chain worn around the "waist" of the armor.
Pages: Written (Consumed). Made of home-made glass and backed with a cardboard composite, these pages are etched with a variety of geometric patterns. Each page is essentially a scroll containing a different spell, ranging from large defensive screens to restorative magics, and even a few traps and medium explosives. When the magic is triggered, the glass is vaporized and the cardboard backing burned away, leaving the next spell in the book free for use.
Shield of SHIVA: Written (Activated). Mechanically, this is a durable sheet of metal leaves that folds into a rectangular box. A brisk shake unfolds and deploys the shield into its functional form, as a kite shield (upside-down triangle). Magically, planting the tip against the ground expands the area that the shield "covers" as magical force radiates from the shield, sufficient to protect the entire SHIVA armor, provided the armor is crouched directly behind the shield.
Warning: this product not designed to make you invulnerable to harm, just to give you more options and power to those options.
Manufacturer's Note: Use of this product will almost certainly cause you to come to harm. Use at your own discretion. Please send bug reports and any error messages to Lt. Cmdr N'dant.
What does it look like/how does it move? (I really suck at drawing, and was combining a lot of elements, so here's some pictures and you try to mash em all up into something semi-functional)
Overall coloring is jet black, thanks to the sunlight absorption technologies that are built into the armor.

www.friendsofblackwater.org/eagle_cam_blog/eagle_foot.gif Example of the setup for the foot, though for the Shiva, a light weight metal composite is used instead of organic material.
3.bp.blogspot.com/_372pXNDb6uY/SuafyJPe8iI/AAAAAAAAAao/Yqd8WizQAhs/s400/EXO_SEP08_i_frnt2_fin_1200.jpg main body reference, while keeping in mind that the arms do not bear the primary ranged weapons, instead those are the LANCER pods mounted on the shoulders of the frame. No antennae either. The gait and movement of the SHIVA armor is based on the mechanical weapon from the movie District 9 (youtube is your friend). Size is also appropriate.
Constructed from Tier 2-4 materials, the majority being tier 2 and 3 materials, largely covered in tier 3 written magic. Makes use of the same coating that the Charge Cloak employs, allowing it to absorb sunlight that is then translated into power. Also makes use of the Mk A1 Capacitor, which functions similarly to the Mk 2b, but has a greater capacity and charge time. Power can also be supplied with Glyphic prisms, which are a series of mirrors, prisms, and other reflectors that serve to route a beam of sunlight into a perpetual loop, forming a geometric symbol. Requires direct sunlight to operate, but provides a great boost to power and capability for the SHIVA armor.
This product is a prototype and should not be considered for mass production until such time as what Lt. Commander N'dant calls "Significant Loss Potential" has been resolved. Estimated time to completion: 5 years. Both the LANCER tech and SHIVA armor are to be regarded in this light until such time as the research is completed.
History
Describe your character's life history. You can be as detailed or thorough as you want, but you must include at least a few paragraphs worth of text to be complete. The player should gradually add more information as the character progresses in game, but try not to retcon your character's past unless it is absolutely necessary. Important details may be kept from the public for the sake of a plot twist/dramatic tension, but must still be shared with the admins in private.
Born and raised in Rasgrad, Asce was home-schooled by his parents from a young age. Both his parents were considered radicals, as they did not espouse the "humans first" values of their government. Reared in such an environment, Asce learned not only tolerance for the oppressed races in his homeland, but also how to properly "fit in" by giving lip service to the government inspectors or other people. Aside from this, Asce had a very common childhood, and if you asked him then what he wanted to be as a grown up, he would have answered "Engineer!!" then excitedly talked about trains and building bridges and visiting far off lands.
From 14 on, when taken to the mandatory mage talent screenings, Asce failed spectacularly time and again. Realizing with some relief that he might never show any talents in that area, his father found him a job as an assistant in a local factory that specialized in rust sealants. By the time he was 16, he was in charge of the vats of materials, something he took no small pride in. His supervisors were puzzled though; on days where he managed the vat the sealant came out exceptionally well, whereas days when others did, the extraordinarily good batches did not turn up. At his boss's urging, Asce applied one more time to test to be a mage and was discovered to have that talent when mixing elementary potions. His parents were very proud, but the celebration was short-lived, as their own jobs were dependent on following the Mage Laws enacted to ensure that every person talented in magic in Ruthenia received the "benefit" of a thorough education paid by the military. Waving good bye to his parents at the train station, Asce didn't realize then that this would be his last sight of his parents. Scarcely a month into his "education," word came of an accident at the factory his parents had worked in. An explosion, and of 5 dead, his parents were two.
After being recognized as a Materials mage, Asce was instructed in the basic military training for those types of mages, including how to make things ranging from explosives and simple munitions, to standard healing potions and alchemically treated bandages. After the basics were out of the way, Asce was presented with a choice: combat posting or research and development. Choosing the latter, Asce was absorbed into a department focused on special weapons development and alternative energy sources for military use. Here, Asce spent the next decade before achieving a rank high enough to begin his own research program. For the next 10 years, Asce focused nearly exclusively on the development of the LANCER and SHIVA technologies. Asce staunchly refused to take any apprentices or support staff, preferring to do all of the work himself, something his supervisors found odd, but had no objections to, as he was saving the department expenses.
Though he had grown to be a powerful mage, Asce rejected most of the trappings of office, instead preferring to spend almost all of his time in the laboratory. By the end of his 10th year on the SHIVA project, he had become a virtual recluse, eating and sleeping in the lab. Concerned about his project and demanding a demonstration of what he'd come up with, his superiors gave him an ultimatum. Display significant results beyond endless papers and memos on his work or be demoted and transferred to a combat post. Asce had three days.
