Player: Josiah
Contact: PM Me
Intentions: Ninja for Hire
Background
Name: Kenshin Ryuunosuke (first, last)
Race: Human
Species: Dragon Heritage
Age: 19
Tier: 2
Social
Place of Birth: Kusanagi
Allegiances: Kazangakure, Kusanagi, the Ryuunosuke family
Aspirations: Stand in his own light
Nicknames: Glasses
Titles: Chuunin
Relatives: Yumiko (older sister), Teruko (grandmother)
Significant Other: Hakuoh (He doesn't know yet)
Mental
Personality: Ambivalent to the point of reading when he should be focusing, Kenshin's been stuck in his sister's shadow for ... well, his whole life. Eventually, he just learned to stop caring about standing out, or being noticed. That's a mixed lesson to learn from, but they're ninja. They're not supposed to stand out anyway.
Likes: Reading, multitasking, ramen, training, using the eyes to get away with looking at things he shouldn't be, recognition, his new teammate named Ichor, that strapping, broody elite ninja, Hakuoh
Dislikes: Being challenged, being the center of attention, being on a team with his sister, mind-altering drugs of any legality, parties, sensory overload, talking with his parents for any length of time, the hint that he may be of alternate sexual orientation
Strengths: Kenshin has a natural talent for splitting focus - possibly a result of his inherent magical nature. Keen and analytical, he picks up even minute details readily. All that reading had to be good for something, too. He knows much about the body and is an effective amateur medic.
Weaknesses: When not unhappy with being overshadowed, Kenshin becomes self-conscious instead - and more so - in proportion to how close someone is to reading his secrets. He has enough battle experience not to let fear control him in battle, but he's well aware how "weak" he is compared to the most dangerous foes. He can thank his sister for that.
Physical
Major Details: white eyes, dark glasses, mid length black hair, slightly tanned skin, 5' 7"
Appearance: Lean to the point of almost being scrawny, one could look on him clothed and think him a perfectly average looking sort. That's an image he cultivates, to better stay under the radar. Dark blue jeans and a gray hoodie - usually up - are frequent staples of his attire. What muscle he has is dense enough. His big, dark round glasses - a prop only - tend to be good at keeping his odd eyes unnoticed.
Natural Abilities: Kenshin has had enough ninja training to make him physically superior to the average person, where dexterity and strength are concerned.
Natural Traits: Kenshin has the usual human traits, save his pure white eyes.
Strengths: Kenshin is flexible and athletic from years of martial training. He uses those traits to his advantage in physical combat to get up close, and when necessary, dance with other combatants. Acrobatics movements are fluid and controlled, with near perfect balance.
Weaknesses: Kenshin relies on the power of the Adamant Palm for much of his strength. With it, he doesn't need to be able to throw a haymaker to take down a rampaging werewolf. Without it, he just can't. Standing his ground against a charging dire tiger is not a part of the plan.
Magical
Specializations:
- Tier 1: Mental (Wise Eyes of the Dragon), 2.5.
- Tier 2: Physical (Adamant Palm), 2.5.
- Tier 3:
- Tier 4:
- Tier 5:
Visual Display: His eyes are solid white. Energy projected by his Adamant Palm is a translucent white as well.
Special Abilities: En Speed 1, Familiar (Partial, Takeru), En Speed 2
Bonus Special Abilities: Insight, Healing, Teleport
Unique Abilities: The dragon blood in his family can manifest in different ways over time. Kenshin has not unlocked further abilities with it yet.
Strengths: "Skill" is the chief point of his magical strengths. Already advanced in the subtleties of the "Wise Eyes", Kenshin is good at using his magic sight on everything around him in 360 degrees. He's proficient in the telescopic and piercing aspects of this sight as well, and readily sees through most illusions. He is similarly highly skilled at manipulating his emitted magical energies, such that he can make it as subtle as the wind, or as sharp as a blade. Combined with the Wise Eyes, Kenshin is highly effective at targeting pressure points and attacking his target's nervous system. This allows him to knock out magical enemies that would otherwise demand the use of lethal force to disable.
Weaknesses: Kenshin doesn't have his sister's raw power, or her talent. While she can smash a flying boulder into dust, he'd be better off slicing it in half - or better yet, just getting out of the way. His inability to use hand signs or write magical seals makes him unable to do most of the techniques ninja are known for. His few long range ones might have the force of a bullet, which is good enough to take down unprotected targets at least, but not most advanced threats. On his own, he otherwise relies almost exclusively on close combat. The power of the Wise Eyes have their own limits as well. Using the telescopic side of his eye magic limits how much he can see, effectively giving him tunnel vision to that point. There's also the problem that "seeing" magic isn't the same as understanding it. He's had to learn what different auras mean.
Inventory
Mundane: Wallet, Kunai, Shuriken - First Aid kit, sometimes
Magical:
Warded Watch - Written (Perpetual). An utterly nondescript watch on his left hand. Nagian magitechs have laced it with advanced antidetection wards, the better to protect him on his various missions.
Chakra Amplifier - Material (Perpetual). A katana with a dark, ebony blade. The blade is made of a special material that amplifies magic when passed through the blade.
Knife Sheath - Written (Perpetual). It's bigger on the inside, and hides the true size of a blade put into it, making a full katana take up the size of a dagger instead.
History
Living in your older sibling's shadow is always hard. Living in the shadow of someone absolutely perfect, is even harder.
In the World War, a Nagian man was wounded on the battlefield. Almost dead, he wouldn't have made it if not for the intervention of one of the Dragon Knights - and one of the literal dragons at that. The pair were some of the lucky ones to survive all its hardships, and fell in love along the way. The war was hardly over before they were husband and wife, starting their lives over with each other.
Those were his great grandparents, he's told. Since then, the blood of the dragons has blessed the Ryuunosuke family with certain hereditary traits. They're supposed to be great warriors and better ninja, and - generally speaking - just better.
His older sister lived up to that expectation. Gifted and powerful, even at a young age, Yumiko was raising the bar before Kenshin could even tie his shoes. In such a family as theirs, "excellence" was the beginning and end of their joy - and so, Yumiko brought them plenty of just that.
Kenshin wasn't terrible. He inherited the family's blessings like the rest. They just … took longer to manifest. So Yumiko had more than a few years to stretch the extent of her perfection before he even exhibited the first signs of magic. When his Eyes first awoke to their potential, he never even thought it noteworthy. The rest of the family clamored to celebrate every feat of power Yumiko pushed out. His facility for supernatural sight went unrecognized.
He never hated her. He begrudged her, at times. He envied her often. She was good to him. At times, it felt like she was the only one really paying attention to his accomplishments. But he still couldn't help but think his life would be easier if she was just … a bit less good at everything.
He'd only had "the most basic training," before being accepted into the ninja academy of Kazangakure. Dark round glasses hid the white eyes from others' sight, so he could be just another member of the crowd. The other students wouldn't know their connection. There, he at least had the chance to escape his sister's shadow.
Or he would have, if it wasn't for the fact that the teachers were constantly comparing him to his so-much-better sister. Even when he scored solidly in the upper part of the spectrum, there was always that silent look of "Your sister did better. You could do better."
So he added to his "not caring" by also "not looking," and bringing books to class with him. The other students made a game of throwing things at him and seeing if he'd block it in time. When he did … the teachers started, too.
With his inherent magic, he wasn't suited for standard ninja arts, like hand signs or ofuda. He was a different kind of fighter - and one that was still happily added to the ranks when he graduated. Battle - practice, and otherwise - had proven he was effective at nonlethally taking down enemy mages. That was something he could claim to be even better at than his sister. He was finally coming in to his own person.
And then they slapped him on a team with a her.
His future boyfriend will never notice him at this rate.
Familiar
Name: Takeru
Race: Wild Fey
Species: ROUS (Rodent of Unusual Size)
Tier: 1
Appearance: A mouse-like creature capable of walking on its back legs, Takeru stands around eight inches tall. When on missions, he wears the dark wrappings of a ninja, with a wakizashi across his back. Otherwise, he goes "incognito."
Natural Abilities:
Natural Traits: Takeru's eyes and ears are much more acute compared to a human's, and his tail provides him excellent balance.
Specializations:
- Tier 1: Mental (Lightning), Proficiency 2. Takeru can project lightning from his person.
Special Abilities: En Strength, Familiar (Partial, Kenshin)
Bonus Special Abilities: En Speed, Shapeshifting (Item: Armor)
Unique Abilities: None
Strengths: On his own, Takeru is a fearless warrior of the night. He's small enough not to avoid most traps and get where others can't. He's much better working in concert with Kenshin, where he can armor up the not-bulletproof warrior, and add some lightning to his attacks. He has a better grasp of Kenshin than most people, even his family. They work well together.
Weaknesses: On his own, Takeru is a fearless warrior of the night. He's just not the most effective. Even though he hits harder than he should, he still doesn't come up to most people's knees, and faces all the difficulties of working in a world designed for people seven or eight times his size. Sometimes, Kenshin is also just a little too slow to action for his taste. He's working on patience.
Magical Items:
Cleaver of Cats - Written (Perpetual). A wakizashi with kanji inscribed along the blade. The blade is enchanted to cleave things more easier, to accommodate his meager strength.
