Some specializations of magic are readily able to counter or negate another. One mage's flamethrower spell might be negated by another mage blasting back with water, frost, or a jet of air pressure. However, this is quite frequently not the case, especially with the many styles of magic available. In such occasions, the two mages will end up creating Magic Friction.
A relatively common phenomena, Magic Friction is when two kinds of projected magic do not expressly counter or negate each other. However, because the magical energy between them is not being used or balanced, it will start to build up at the point of contact, until the energy explodes. Fire and lightning are well known for causing this phenomenon, but it can happen with many different kinds of blasts, even ones that aren't necessarily explosive. How large the explosion is directly proportional to how powerful the magics crashing together are.
In combat, only the one defending against an opposing mage's blast attack may write that they caused a Magic Friction explosion.
