A "magic feather" is something that helps a person perform magic, without actually being magical itself. Effectively, magic feathers use the placebo effect. This does not mean they don't help. They do. Magic Feathers quite frequently help a mage focus their power, their control, or augment it some similar way. This does not give an actual bonus to their Proficiency, but it does help them cast to their fullest potential (at that time).
Magic feathers can literally be almost anything: a symbol, an item, a phrase, another person's presence, faith, friendship, love - anything. They are quite frequently unrelated to the mage's actual specializations or forms, but can give the appearance they are using some other form simultaneously.
For example, it's quite common for mages to say the name of their attack or use some kind of mantra to get their minds "in the zone", even when they're actually a Physical or Mental mage. Some Spoken and Mental mages likewise use gestures to help them cast a certain spell. All magic feathers are a matter of flavor and while any player could decide to use another's choice of magic feather, there is no single "right" or "best" magic feather for everyone.
Material magic is the one exception to this, as for a Material mage, some "magic feathers" could actually be real magic feathers - such as from a phoenix or more likely, some more common mystical bird. Material mages actually could use something like that to make a spell easier to perform, sort of like if someone finished half your homework for you. Some spells may, however, require some object or component to work, depending on how specific the terms of the spell are or on what the mage is trying to accomplish.
Spoken, Physical, and Mental magic are not actually made stronger by this method, but if a mage was to use both Material and Written magic in the creation of a magic item, that item would indeed benefit from the union of those forms.
- A Written magic item made with Tier 1 to 3 materials or vice versa is treated as if it is .5 Tiers stronger.
- A Written magic item made with Tier 4 to 5 materials or vice versa is treated as if it is 1 Tier stronger.
