Magic items have their own magic. While this may seem redundant, it's very important to realize this for the following reason: mages cannot carry too many magic items on their person, or else the magic in those items will start to interfere with their own.
Think of your character's magic as a unique musical instrument. Adding one or two things could make it sound better, but adding too many things to an instrument will prevent it from vibrating and making any music at all. It's the same philosophy.
Tier 0 (Nonmagicals) do not have this problem, because they don't use magic themselves. Tier 0's can carry and wield as many magical items as they want (within reason, please).
A character that uses magic can only carry and wield up to four large magic items. A player can freely give up a large magic item slot for two small magic items instead.
- A large magic item is like a sword, armor or shield.
- A small magic item is like a potion, dagger, boots or gauntlets. A magic item counts as small if it is smaller than the person's forearm, but an unusually powerful object of that size may be considered a large item anyway.
Written mages and Material mages can bypass this because of their very form of magic.
- Written mages reduce their total large magic items by two, but they can carry and wield as many magic items as they have enchanted themselves. This is because the mage is in sync with their own enchanted items. They can also sync with Charged items made by other Written mages.
- Material mages have no limit to the number of magic items they can carry and wield. This is because Material magic is entirely about connecting with external sources of magic. They still cannot make or recharge Written magic items unless they have taken that form as well.
Please note: this is an in-game balancing mechanic. While all characters have the privilege of carrying a few magic items, Written magic and Material magic both focus explicitly on utilizing them. If you want your character to use a lot of magic items, please just take one of those as one of their Forms, or have your character be Tier 0. How many magic items your character may be allowed is dependent upon a number of factors in game, including how old they are, how powerful they are, how wealthy they are, where they lived and who they know. A majority of characters should start with two or three at the most.
