Background
Name: Finnley Carver
Race: Spirit
Species: Human Ghost
Age: "Biologically", 18. Chronologically, 19.
Tier: 2
Social
Place of Birth: Livester, Greenwich
Allegiances: Greenwich, Camford
Aspirations: Become human again
Nicknames: Finn
Titles: None
Relatives: Drew and Nancy Carver (parents), Beth Carver (sister)
Significant Other: None
Mental
Personality: Finnley is trying very, very hard to keep a smile on his face every day - and on most days, he succeeds. He's just a guy at heart. He liked playing sports, hanging with his friends, looking at pretty girls, the works - or at least, he did when he was alive. Being a ghost has put a slight damper on all of that. On his bad days, when the weight of what he's lost gets to him, depression inevitably sets in, and so does the miniature thundercloud above his head.
Likes: Sports, hanging out, girls, steak, phasing, flying, fighting
Dislikes: Being unable to touch or eat, the wards stopping ghosts from going in the bathrooms and sleeping quarters, tests, potion classes
Strengths: Being awake all night, when most people are asleep, has given him more time alone. He's made friends with some of the nocturnals, sure, but the time has at least given him more chances to peruse the library than his sleep-acquainted classmates. He's also slowly developed the sense of fearlessness that comes from already being dead. It's not like he can die again.
Weaknesses: His mind still remembers what his body doesn't know. There are times he still craves the taste of food or drink, and it's a lonely existence when you're a shadow of life. The other spirits on campus are trying to help him adjust as only they can, but "life" is still too fresh in his mind. He doesn't want to get used to being a ghost. He wants to be alive. He also still retains a fear of spiders from when he was alive. Sure, they can't hurt him - but tell that to his subconscious.
Physical
Major Details: Short blonde hair, blue eyes, glasses, uniform, usually translucent 5'11"
Appearance: In life, Finnley was just an average guy. He had blonde hair, cropped short. He wore glasses over his blue eyes, but was fit enough beneath the school uniform. He stood at a good 5'11", with the pale skin common to most natives of Greenwich. As a ghost, however, his body is translucent and incorporeal, a mass of magic and mind. His "clothing" is technically as much a part of him as "skin," though he has a bit more control over that. With his magic, he can also will himself to look opague. That's an easy trick.
Natural Abilities: Being a ghost, Finnley doesn't really have any natural abilities.
Natural Traits: Finnley has the average traits of a human being.
Strengths: As a ghost, physical things just pass right through him and vice versa. He has no hunger, thirst, nor physical needs of any kind anymore. The only time he ever gets tired anymore is when he uses too much magic.
Weaknesses: As a ghost, muscles are meaningless. He cannot physically touch anything naturally, much less interact with it. The only concept of "touch" he still has is when he comes in contact with a magical object or ward, and even than, that's just resistance to contact.
Magical
Specializations:
- Tier 1: Spoken (Latin), Proficiency 2.
- Tier 2: Mental (Ghost), Proficiency 2 (3). Finnley has subconsciously embraced several magical abilities associated with ghosts, such as telekinesis, possession, illusions, ectoplasmic energy projection and frost magic.
Visual Display: When Finnley uses large displays of magic, the edges of his "body" tend to shimmer or glow.
Special Abilities: Immunity to Cold, Enhanced Speed, Discorporation (icy mist)
Bonus Special Abilities: Alternate Sense (Magic), Familiar (Ghost blade), Levitation
Unique Abilities: Finnley can temporarily forge the totality of his Ghost magic into a blade of ethereal energy. The blade functions as a Full Familiar, but only for his Ghost powers. He can be separated from the blade temporarily, and loses his Ghost magic accordingly, but it eventually dissipates while away from him to be "re-forged" from himself later.
Strengths: Ghost magic, while relatively new to him, comes second nature now. Lacking in the ability to move anything with his hands, he's gotten proficient at telekinetic manipulation on a fine level. Seeing as he's still technically a student, time in combat classes has given him the opportunity to train his other new abilities like energy projection and frost magic. Shooting energy blasts and putting up shields is easy. The fact that he also doesn't have a literal mind also means that Mental magic is much less straining on him than it would be for a living person.
Weaknesses: Finnley is only a passable spoken mage at best. He's gotten better in his time as a ghost, but it's still not something he's great at. His facility for possession is limited: while he can get even inanimate objects to move for him, his spirit rejects the task after awhile. Possessing a living body, if even possible (it doesn't always work), is especially draining. People of stronger will and magic can shake him off with greater ease, though he's only actually done it to a living being a few times in practice (the first time, by accident).
Inventory
"Mundane": black pants, white dress shirt, black tie trailing over a grey sweater, black robe open in the front - all usually ethereal and part of his ghostly nature.
Magical:
History
When he was alive, Finnley suffered under a curse of normalcy. He had a younger sister, a mom and a dad. He got average grades in high school, and was an average athlete, too. He seemed destined for an average cubicle life, too, but late in high school though, something finally happened that shook up things a bit.
Magic popped up.
With the excitement of one waiting for a change, he eagerly applied to Camford and crossed his fingers at what he thought was his one chance at escape. Sure, he was a late bloomer for a natural mage, but he was still happily accepted by the school (and even more so happily for him).
Of course, it was just his luck: he was average there, too. He picked up the magic enchantments well enough, awkwardly not fitting in with a few other adult classmates who had wanted to learn magic. Even though they weren't natural mages and he was, there were several that quickly outstripped his own ability.
It was a tedious disappointment, once the disillusionment set in. Part of him wanted him to just stop trying. The other part of him was adamant to make something of himself, to take advantage of this one golden opportunity given to him by the universe. He redoubled his efforts, working twice as hard, to be half as good.
It was ironic: if he'd been working less hard, he might have noticed the new guy goofing off in potions class or recognized the word when someone yelled "SHIELDS!!"
Grinding flower petals in a pestle - that was the last thing he did, with his hands. It took him a moment to realize what happened. He was still seated, but the mortar and pestle were gone, and so was the table. So was his chair, but he wasn't falling. And his arms didn't use to be transparent.
"Oh. ... Shit."
Why one person becomes a ghost and so many others don't is a subject of much research and debate, with no clear answer. Whether it was the nature of the accident, unfinished business, or divine chance, Finnley's spirit was still around, even if his body wasn't. The perpetrator of the accident was expelled and put on a watch list, and was lucky not to have been charged with reckless endangerment and (in)voluntary manslaughter. For his own part, he made a point of demanding no one inform his family - not just yet.
The continued presence of his spirit has given the staff some hope that they'll be able to give him back a body, if not necessarily his own. Yet there have been ... complications. His spirit has rejected several attempts to merge with other, potential, bodies. The "why" has been unclear, though they've detected some kind of interference. Research has progressed slowly the last year, as the staff continues to look for other ways to aid the new ghost, but the longer he stays a spirit, the more he worries he'll be stuck this way forever.
Well... at least he can keep up with his studies.
