Intentions: Good
Background
Name: Tomaz Grimwold
Race: Wild Fey
Species: Catperson
Age: 29
Tier: 2
Social
Place of Birth: Columbia, Alexandria
Allegiances: Alexandria, The Central Intelligence Organization
Aspirations: Finish the next mission without getting shot at or blown up. He succeeds. Sometimes.
Nicknames: Maz, Donny Joule, Tesla Voltaire, Lucky, Nineteen (Lives)
Titles: Secret Agent, Codename: Endotherm
Relatives: They think he's dead. It's best that way.
Significant Other: Pain and Suffering (They have an open relationship)
Mental
Personality: A happy pessimist by explosion, Maz has taken a dozen too many fireballs to the face and lost a few too many fellow agents to be the same positive guy he was growing up. These days, he's the kind who smiles and laughs while saying "We're all gonna die," and then jumps headlong into whatever it is he's doing. Obsessive-compulsively thinking about ways things can go wrong and how he could die at any one moment is good for his job - and bad for most other things in life. Those who don't know the interior workings of his mind would say he looks cheerful, laid back and energetic - and they'd be right, from a certain point of view. He's a little too concerned with proving The Maus exists, and every now and then, he's been known to drop a comment that makes absolutely no sense to others. He speaks in Southern accent.
Likes: The cover of night, casual pleasure, a mission going smoothly, deactivating a bomb (successfully), finding clues about The Maus, people believing him about The Maus, his fedora, rabbit stew
Dislikes: Not sticking the landing, being shot at, losing a limb, drowning, a mission going awry, Ruthenia, The Maus, people not believing him about The Maus, being partnered on dangerous missions, the collar they make him wear, sweet things
Strengths: The Central Intelligence Organization has trained him well. Not only is he fluent in several languages and has a running knowledge of many weapons, both magical and physical, but he knows how to keep a cool head under pressure, how to defuse or arm most explosive devices, how to bluff a target and how to engage multiple enemies at the same time, but a whole assortment of other skills necessary for doing what he does - and surviving. Of course, the fact that he's come away from so many missions blown half to heck has also given him an extremely high tolerance for pain, and he can ignore or embrace it with monk-like proficiency.
Weaknesses: Believing in one's self has a big outcome in an engagement. He doesn't. He fully expects to be killed any day now, and that perspective screws him over as much as it liberates him. He's bad at forming meaningful relationships. He's convinced those kind of things aren't for people in his line of work. If it's not life or death, he really only gives half an effort into whatever he's doing. He's completely coasting on his abilities - however significant or insignificant they are. He could be much smarter, stronger, or more powerful if only he put in more effort to train. Instead, he lives as if he's going to die tomorrow, and that encourages him to be lazy, or to make reckless or suicidal acts, banking on the slim chance that he might be able to survive and not caring if he doesn't. More than once he's blown up a grenade at close range - as a defense. This kind of attitude makes him unpredictable to his fellow agents at times - which is not a good thing for their line of work.
Physical
Major Details: Light skin, light orange tail and feline ears on the side of his head, medium length wavey red-orange hair, 5'7"
Appearance: Maz has the body of a gymnast: a strong, densely muscled physique compacted into a small, narrow frame. His hair is short, a few inches long at the most, with sideburns that lead down to a firm jawline. Green eyes shine a spark of life with every rogue-ish smile. His overt Fey traits are few, but enough to indicate he's clearly something other than human. His ears - located on the side of his head as normal - are pointed and furred like a cat's, and he possesses a similarly orange-furred tail. The ears he can hide with the length of his hair. If he wants to hide his tail, he needs to keep it in his pants.
Natural Abilities: Faster and stronger than the average man, early training compounded with Wild Fey predispositions has put him on par with a college level, if not professional or Olympic, gymnast. His strength is such that he can support his whole body weight with his arms and then some.
Natural Traits: His Fey senses and some internal biological features are more in line with a cat's than a human being's, and he can easily see through extreme darkness. His body is naturally flexible, and his tail is useful for keeping balance.
Strengths: Acrobatics are his strong suit - or rather, his strongest suit - and his ability to travel parkour style across most landscapes is a strong asset to stealth and speed when he's not. Agent training has also led to his proficiency in several martial arts, and knowing multiple ways to kill or incapacitate a person with his bare hands has proven to be all kinds of useful. Agent training has also made him a good enough shot, and while he may not be the best marksmen, he can practically dance with two guns. Enhanced Speed doesn't make him the fastest around, but an edge is an edge.
Weaknesses: Maz doesn't have much weight behind him, so while he can take a hit and even give one too at high speed, he doesn't actually have a large amount of muscle mass. Maneuvers that require a certain amount of raw strength or force are beyond him. He's also just as vulnerable as anyone else to fatal measures that have nothing to do with energy. A lack of oxygen or space, strong poisons, a puddle big enough for his face - all of those things are just as viable methods of harming him as most other people.
Magical
Specializations:
- Tier 1: Mental (Energy Absorption), Proficiency 3. Maz can use his own magic to absorb energy - whether magical or natural - that comes within range, to use as his own.
- Tier 2: Physical (Energy Absorption), Proficiency 3. Maz can use his own magic to absorb energy - whether magical or natural - by attacking it or bracing his body, to use as his own.
Visual Display: When activating his powers, his eyes could glow light green and sparks of energy appear around them or an involved limb. If creating a field or "barrier", the air shimmers.
Special Abilities: Enhanced Speed, Enhanced Recovery 2, Immunity to Telepathy
Bonus Special Abilities: En Recovery 1, Animal Shapeshifting (Cat)
Unique Abilities: None
Strengths: Maz's specific kind of magic make him incredibly good at fighting many other mages. He's become exceedingly proficient at absorbing hostile spells in his line of work, as well as taking the force out from behind a bullet such that it falls harmlessly off his person. In physical combat, he can even absorb the strength behind a giant's punch to defend himself from being flattened, and the very use of this power keeps his physical and magical reserves going strong and energized. Most mages don't know what he's doing right away. He's had long enough to train this power to know that while it may be simple, it's a highly beneficial power that has saved his life countless times already.
Weaknesses: While he has (previously) trained hard to defend himself at a moment's notice, his powers are neither automatic nor reactionary. An explosion or attack that catches him by surprise still can hurt him severely. Focusing on absorbing energy from all directions is much harder and more of a strain then concentrating on one point as well, and some attacks are so strong he can't fully absorb it either. More than once (or twice, or thrice, or whatever is after that) he's survived an explosion and come out missing a limb (or two). Sure, he survived... but even if one has a bullet proof vest, it's best to not be shot at at all. There's also the fact that he uses his power almost entirely in defense. His ability has much more potential then the simple way he employs it, but he either doesn't care to learn or chooses not to.
Inventory
Mundane: two handguns, two knives, wire, grenade(s), disposable cellphone(s), a wallet with fake ID and other necessities, turtleneck shirt, padded vest (to hide the guns), cargo khaki pants, sports shoes, brown fedora
Magical:
Cat's Collar - Written (Perpetual). A small light brown leather collar that shifts with his cat shape rather being absorbed (which he normally hides under a turtleneck shirt). The inside of the collar has a written spell to protect him from magical detection or scrying, which is altered or upgraded every so often.
Utility Clips - Written (Activated). Empty magazines for his guns, with magic runes on the inside. The clips create rounds based on what he asks for, including piercing, bouncing and tracking rounds, and elemental ones like fire, ice, acid and lightning. They are designed specifically to draw energy from him to reload, or for charged shots.
History
Tomaz Grimm grew up the son of a cop in a family of four, and so even from a young age, there was a sense of duty and drive instilled in his life. He was an apt science student (to the delight of his father) and a dedicated gymnast (to the delight of his mother) and his laid-back cheerfulness made him popular with his classmates (all to the envy of his younger sister). He made enough marks and headway in both aspects of his life to attend college on scholarships.
ROTC training replaced the gym as the focus of his physical training, and focus and resolve threw him further into what he had already decided would be a career of service to the military, or the government in general. Being a cop would have gotten his mother's approval, but he didn't think that life was enough for him. Various scouts spotted him over time, but it wasn't until a chance happening in the science lab that his future took off.
A student was fooling around, or just being stupid on the experiment one group over. Maz had been watching idly by through his own work, noting the other's progress as much as one watches a terrible driver getting behind the wheel. It was a good thing too, as one more chemical was added to a group that it most certainly did not get along with it ... A flash of motion saw Maz dashing to the nearest window with volatile concoction in hand. He was in midswing as the miniature bomb went off in his hand.
Witnesses said it was like watching a grenade go off, stop halfway down the length of his arm, and then shrink back into his grip - before he collapsed onto the floor. The window and part of the wall was blasted apart, he was out cold, and his arm was a shriveled fingerless cinder of what it should have been, but it could have been worse. Glass shards seemed to have stuck in his clothes, but not his flesh, and the fact he was alive at all was a miracle of magic. Healers arrived on the scene for emergency treatment, only to find it wasn't as necessary as they thought. He was already recovering from the blast at rapid speed.
Being one of the "class heroes" got the scouts' attentions better than the rest, and having a bit of magic didn't hurt either. He was a late bloomer, but a natural mage he was. Out of college, he was (happily) fast-tracked into federal service, spending a few years as a police officer and bomb technician where his ability to absorb and survive otherwise fatal blasts made him reliable and proficient at his job. Service as a special agent quickly turned into something a bit more ...
He kept up the masquerade with his family for several years longer, and they were none the wiser. It wasn't till a mission dropped him straight into hell that things changed.
It was supposed to be a simple: get in, wire the place to blow, get out. He went in with his team, splitting up to cover the four sides of the building, when he found something: an elevator shaft, running deeper than the facility was supposed to go. He investigated, finding level after level of research and development for war: weapons, chemicals, monsters, all of it headed by someone named "The Maus." A map displayed paths and plots for wars between all the nations, and plans were being made to trigger a domino of destruction.
He never knew if he or they tripped something, or if the sensors were simply more powerful than their anti-detection wards. Daniel died first - then Jessie, then Max the little Pooka. He heard them gunned down over their comms, even as he ran from dozens of The Maus' soldiers and battlemages. Trapped in a corner, his escape was only possible by the same series of explosions designed to bring the place crumbling down.
He limped away missing an arm, half his face and most of his body burned or bleeding. Whatever evidence he had was destroyed in the blast - photos up in smoke just as thoroughly as the other levels were buried under tons of rubble. When he made it back to base, his report of secret, undetected levels and plans for world war was taken with less than full credibility. Being caught in the wake of his friends' deaths and his own grave injuries cast serious doubt on his report, and more than a few thought he was making it up to cover up some failure that led to the mission's disastrous end.
His successful track record and unique abilities have kept him in the government's employ, but like several others, he works most infiltration missions solo now. The (sad) fact is that in the rise of greater enemy resistance, it's easier for him to protect himself alone and to slip in under cover than to get in a team. Going in alone also gives him the freedom to keep an eye out for The Maus... a task he approaches with the only real determination he has left.
