He didn't exactly remember how he went from being an orphan to being enlisted for military. He guess the country just thinks that's its quicker and more convenient to push a gun into a kid's hand rather than training a soldier. After all, every one can pull a trigger, can't it?
After a few years in the military, he ended up in the Moutain Division in charge of a small group of other orphans. He tried to keep the kids as well fed as he could manage, but the deputy commander disagreed with this as, he says, "They can't kill people for us yet."
One day, an arms dealer arrived at the mountain base. After a brief meeting with the deputy commander, they went out, taking one of the kids with them. he tried to make them take him instead, to no avail but getting himself beat up again. From the bits of the conversation that he overheard, they seem to be going out to get the arms dealer's "merchandise". Why would they need a kid, he didn't know.
They went back to the base that evening. The kid was not with them. Ray tried to asked what happened, but get shoved out of their way.
He eavesdropped the conversation of the deputy commander and the arms dealer later, and found out that they made the kid walked on a mined area, to set them off so that they can retrieve an arms shipment which was being hold away by enemy forces. "Good riddance," he even said, "Saves me from all the rations that brat stole to feed'em."
Determined to avenge him, Ray grab his knife and walked out of the barrack only to find the base is in complete chaos. Some enemy force seemed to be attacking, gunshots being fired, explosions of grenade echoed in the base from time to time.
He put it at the back of his mind, decided that he will just get to the commander before anyone did, and grab a rifle from a dead soldier. He kill his way to the commander, shooting at anyone who point a gun at him, not caring who's side the soldier's on. He found the deputy commander and the arms dealer, and unloaded all his remaining bullets into their body.
He didn't notice something wrong until he was disarmed and forced to the ground with a soldier pinning him down. He didn't fight back, as he was too exhausted, and he didn't thought he would survive anyway.
He found out later that the enemy force was The Resistance's soldier. He was then escorted back to their underground base, and during his interview with the Leader, he was offered two options: the first was peace, a chance to settle down into domestic life, a chance he never had.
He rejected without any second thoughts, and answered when questioned why that settling down would break him due to his inability to overcome his guilt at his subordinates' death.
And thus he was presented the second option: a chance to fight back, a chance to ensure that something like this doesn't happen again.
He accepted, on the catch that the remaining orphans are well cared for.
